Buying a Diamond on Vacation: What to Know Before You Do
Buying a diamond on vacation is not a mistake. Buying one in forty minutes because the ship leaves at five, from a store you picked because it was closest to the pier, is. Here is how to do the first without the second.

The traps when buying a diamond on vacation
- The invented list price. A “$12,000” tag crossed out to “$3,900” is priced at $3,900. Judge the stone, not the discount.
- Soft certificates. An in-house or lesser-known laboratory grade is not comparable with GIA. Compare GIA to GIA.
- The store’s own appraisal. A high appraisal “for insurance” is not proof of value. It is a number the seller wrote: useful for insurance, meaningless for price.
- “Cruise-line recommended”. This is a paid marketing programme, sometimes with a guarantee scheme attached. It is not a quality ranking.
- Lighting. Store lights make every stone sparkle, so ask to see it by the window.
- Time pressure. “This price is only for today” is the oldest one. It will be the same tomorrow.
The rules
- Decide before you land: natural or lab-grown, target grade, and budget. Then look up a reference price for that grade.
- Verify the certificate number on the lab’s website in the store. The GIA report check takes a minute. If you cannot, do not buy.
- Get the return policy in writing, and pay with a credit card that offers purchase protection.
- Buy from a store with a physical, long-standing presence and a way to reach it after you leave.
- Have it appraised independently at home within the return window.
Why an appointment fixes most of this
When a store knows in advance what grade and budget you want, it pulls the stones that fit, assigns someone senior, and skips the theatre. That is what a private viewing with us does. The stones that fit are out, and you know what a fair price looks like before you walk in. It is free, and we have no stake in which store you pick. In Aruba specifically, our diamond buying guide covers the local stores.
Buying a diamond on vacation: the one-line version
Decide at home, verify in the store, and get everything in writing. Do that, and buying a diamond on vacation is simply buying a diamond somewhere sunny.
