Jewelry Shopping in Aruba: The Practical Guide
Jewelry shopping in Aruba: where the stores are, when they open, how the tax really works, how to compare, and how not to get taken for a ride on cruise day.
Jewelry shopping in Aruba is concentrated in two places, and the tax rules are simpler than the “duty-free” signs suggest. This guide covers where the stores are, when they open, what you really pay, and how to compare. Consequently, you can plan a cruise-day visit or a resort-week purchase without guesswork.
Where jewelry shopping in Aruba happens
Downtown Oranjestad has the highest concentration by far: the malls on L.G. Smith Boulevard hold the brand boutiques, and the family stores sit along Weststraat and Havenstraat, a block from the cruise terminal. Everything is within a ten-minute walk.
Palm Beach and Noord serve the high-rise hotels with fewer stores but later hours. Eagle Beach has almost none; guests shop in Oranjestad ten minutes away. Finally, the airport has a small duty-free jewelry counter after security. We work by appointment, so we come to the time and place that suits you rather than the other way round.
When the stores open
Most Oranjestad stores open Monday to Saturday from 9 or 10 am to 6 or 7 pm and close on Sunday. However, several open on Sundays and stay open later when cruise ships are in port. Private viewings with us run seven days a week in season.
How tax works for jewelry shopping in Aruba
Aruba markets itself as duty-free, and import duties on jewelry are low or absorbed by the retailer. There is no VAT and no sales tax added at the register. There is, however, a turnover tax that businesses pay and price in. Compared with buying at home, you save your local sales tax; you do not escape tax altogether. US residents get an $800 duty-free exemption on return, a flat 3% on the next $1,000, and normal duty above that, per U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Full tax guide.
How to compare offers
- Compare the certificate, not the discount. A GIA report describes the stone; a “70% off” tag describes marketing.
- For branded watches and designer jewelry the list price is the list price. Compare service, warranty and papers instead.
- Ask for the return policy, appraisal and warranty in writing before paying. We give all three.
- If a store is “cruise-line recommended”, understand that it is a paid programme. It says nothing about price.
