Diamond in Aruba
GIA-certified and IGI-certified diamonds, custom settings, and on-site 4C education. Private appointments at the partner boutique.
If you’re traveling to Aruba and considering a diamond purchase — engagement ring, anniversary piece, milestone gift — the most important thing is buying from someone who will show you the certification, explain it, and let you compare stones side-by-side. The partner boutique we work with does all three.
This page is a quick primer on what to look for and how the private appointment works for a diamond purchase.
The 4Cs explained briefly
- Cut — how well the diamond is faceted to return light. This is the C that affects sparkle the most. Aim for “Excellent” or “Very Good” cut grade. A great cut on a smaller diamond outperforms a poor cut on a larger one.
- Color — graded D (colorless) to Z (yellow-tinted). D-F are colorless (premium), G-J are near-colorless (best value), K+ shows visible warmth. For white-gold or platinum settings, G-H is the value sweet spot. Yellow-gold settings hide more color, so you can go lower.
- Clarity — how free of inclusions the stone is. FL/IF (flawless) is rare and expensive. VVS1-VVS2 is near-flawless. VS1-VS2 is “eye-clean” for most buyers and the practical sweet spot. SI1-SI2 can be eye-clean too but inspect carefully.
- Carat — weight, not size. A 1ct diamond weighs roughly 0.2g. Carat affects price exponentially — a 2ct diamond costs much more than 2x a 1ct of the same quality.
Certifications: GIA vs IGI
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the gold standard for natural diamond certification. IGI (International Gemological Institute) is the leading certifier for lab-grown diamonds. Both labs grade independently of the seller. Always ask to see the cert at your appointment and verify the inscription on the diamond girdle matches the cert number.
Natural vs lab-grown diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds — same hardness, same sparkle, same fire. They cost roughly 60-80% less for equivalent stones. The trade-off is resale value (lab-grown holds less of its purchase price) and the philosophical preference some buyers have for natural stones. The boutique carries both and will show them side-by-side if you ask.
What happens at a diamond appointment
You’ll be shown stones loose (not in settings), under controlled lighting, with their certs. The boutique brings out 3-8 options that fit your budget and preferences and you compare them in person. If you find one you like, you can choose a setting from inventory or commission a custom setting (typically 7-14 days for custom work; the boutique can ship it home after your trip ends).
